Building a National Currency –
Japan 1868-1899
Prior to the Meiji era, money in Japan was a confusing tangle of different coinages
and locally-issued notes. This article from the American Numismatic Association describes the
transition to a true national monetary system, and some of the economic problems faced by the early
Meiji government. Unfortunately the ANA has taken this page down, but you can still access it on the
Internet Archive.
Japanese Stamps and History
Mostly Japanese, with some pages in English. Stamps and cancellation marks
commemorating famous ancient buildings, people and events.
Satem
This untitled and rather bare-bones site belonged to respected international coin
collector Sergey Temeryazev. He had pre-Edo, Edo-era and modern coins, military coinage, paper money,
and some notes on how money was cast, how dates are represented, and how to tell the different types of
coins. Vanished from the Web now, but still available on the Internet Archive.
